L.A., CA -- November 13, 1999

I went to see MTX at the Whisky in Hollywood just this past Saturday (11/13/99) and I was so excited. Hadn't seen the boyz in over a year, so I was willing to brave L.A. traffic to get to them. Well, yea, there was definitely traffic that day. Here's a little math problem for everyone. The ride from San Diego to L.A. should only take an hour, and when it means Hollywood, you add on another 45 minutes. Standard L.A. traffic will usually set you back at least 2 hours, 1 if you're lucky. My friend Kim and I were not lucky. Besides having to spend almost 3 hours in stop-and-go asshole-ridden traffic, we still had the original time of travel taped on. How long is that drive then kiddies? That's right! Over 4 hours of traveling time for a trip that should've taken less than half of that time!!! Ahh, I love L.A., but yea, we finally get to the club, we have to leave my car in the care of the Mentally Defective Valet Service using my last five bucks, and then we approach the door, are vigorously frisked (always my favorite being the only way I ever get any action) and allowed inside. The Whisky is a very small club if you are under 21. The upper area is for alcoholics only, and if you're not one, you stay on the main floor, and apparently, according to the liverish security guards, one had to stay within the lines of the dance floor, if you didn't you were smacked back on. Ann Beretta was playing when we got there, but they were finishing so we didn't have to stand (on the dancefloor mind you!) through the set for too long. I didn't much go for them live although I have heard some of their stuff on compilations and I was impressed. Mustard Plug was up next and the lead singer of that band seems to have a rather high opinion of himself, as well as possessing a rather large posterior. His ass was the most galvanic thing to occur throughout their entire set. The boys from MTX came to the club while Mustard Plug was playing and Dr. Frank and Jym skipped straight up to the alcohol nook, while Joel chose to pace the lower floor. It wasn't so much pacing as it was walking a few feet and then being intercepted by a volley of 12-14 year olds who would basically say "Oh my god Joel! I love Mr.T Experience soooooooo much, you are the BEST bass player EVER!!" Somehow I kept getting stuck right in front of these proceedings, through no choice of my own. I have to admit Joel looked cute, and his hair color changed since the last time I saw them. Nice. So now, the boys get on the stage, and I find: they have a new keyboardist?!!? What the hell!?!?!? Oh well. Besides that, everything was totally rockin'. They played ALL of my favorite songs and some others that I like, they're just not my faves. Best songs of the night? Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba (got the whole club jumping), Tapin' Up My Heart(I hadn't ever heard it live before), She's My Alcatraz(yay new stuff!), You're the Only One (the entire crowd was yelling the words), I Don't Need You Now(reminds me of an ex-boyfriend), I'm All Yea and She's All No(the song that coerced me to buy Love Is Dead), Even Hitler Had A Girlfriend (Frank introduced this song by saying "all right, for the 10th time today"), More Than Toast(aw, it's just so cute!), Naomi(Did i ever mention how awesome Frank is at writing songs?), and Another Yesterday( yet another reminder of an ex-boyfriend). Through it all Dr. Frank did this cute little hip-swaying thing, Joel wasn't still for a second, Jym looked completely bored, and the keyboardist was acting like he was on happy-crack. I had to leave before they finished cuz my friend Kim has a 12:30 curfew and we had to get home. All in all though, that show has topped all my other show experiences, including a recent JimmyEatWorld show. Yay Mr. T Experience!!!!
