This show was in a really weird venue. It was at the Ohio State University union, in a room that was basically a sports bar. Not the ideal place for a show. Despite this, it turned out to be great.I got to the show pretty early, since I had no idea what time it started and was worried about finding it. (I'm always extra worried about finding places that are inside colleges. I just imagine myself wandering around some huge campus and never finding the place MTX are playing.) Luckilly I had no trouble finding the place. MTX weren't there yet, but I talked to Marc the promoter for a little bit (I'd previously met him at the last Columbus show). The Teen Idols got there shortly after me. Not to much later came MTX. Poor Paige and Frank were both sick. (They ate at a Waffle House and then White Castle, talk about a killer combination!)
Paige and I walked over to watch some people practicing for the Renaissance Festival that was happening there the next weekend. We talked to this one guy who was really funny (none other than the jester himself). He also looked exactly like Chandler from Friends! When we came back toward the van we told Joel that we'd met the guy from friends, and he got all excited. He was about to rush over to meet him when we told him that it wasn't the real Chandler, just someone a lot like him. It was pretty funny.
After they finished loading in, MTX did a quick soundcheck. At this point it was about 7:30, but the show didnt start until 9. This was because there was a pool class in the back, and they had to have complete silence! Who knew that you could take pool in college? Wow!
In the mean time, I had a really great conversation with Frank. He told me that he really really likes the show stories! Yay! It made my day. The whole thing made me just the happiest kid in the world.
Finally, 9 o'clock rolled around. Marc was in the opening band, called Babooshka (I don't know if I spelled that right). I didn't see all of their set, but they had really nice harmonies! During their set I walked to make a phone call, and ran into a girl I'd met at the last Columbus show. I went and hung out at her house for a while (it was like 2 blocks away) and then came back shortly before MTX played.
When we got back to the club, I promptly went to the front of the stage to claim my spot. It was a really low stage, which usually worries me. Those are usually the times when I get knocked over onto the stage and stuff. Luckilly that didn't happen this time! I was able to maintain my spot with relatively no difficulty at all.
As always, it was a great set. Marc taped it for a local radio station, so hopefully I'll be able to get a copy. He was also so super nice as to give me a free cd of his band! I stayed around for a while and helped MTX load out. The night drew to a close, and I left to drive home. What a great night!
