This show was absolutely incredible as well. (Just so you know, I'm probably going to say that in everyone of these little descriptions.) My mom (in one of her nicest mother in the world moods) agreed to drive my friend Karl (from one of the aforementioned groups... see the February 20th story) and I all the way to Chicago so that I could see MTX.We got there and my mom dropped Karl and I off in front of the club. She drove away (or so I thought) and Karl and I went and found Frank gaurding the van. We'd been talking to him for a few minutes, when who should stroll up? None but my mom... (Now... I'm going to tell you this, and you all probably think its really silly how big a deal I thought it was... but c'mon... this is DR. FRANK we're talking about!) She went and introduced herself to Frank (fine) then proceeded to tell him how he's "all I ever talk about" and asked him if he was sure I'd be safe there. Frank assured her I would as I tried to get her to leave. I was *so* embarressed! (Looking back on it I think it's totally hysterical, but what can I say... I embarrass easily.) Despite my utter embarrassment, Frank seemed to get a big kick out of the meeting.
Anyway, Joel came outside and we talked to him for a while, and the night progressed as any other. Karl and I had quite a lengthy discussion with Paul (their roadie at the time), and he was so nice as to give us both Groovie Ghoulies CDs! MTX were awesome, as expected. The crowd was really into it, which was rad...the only thing I didn't like was getting stomped on and squished in my battle for the front...ah...the perils of MTX fandom...
After the show we all hung out and had a grand old time. Karl and I interviewed the Joel and Frank, although, due to the fact that he renounced punk a month later, we never ended up putting a zine together, and the interview lays somewhere burried in his room I'm sure. Some of the more interesting information we found out about the band... Of the Facts of Life characters, Joel relates most to Joe, the masculine girl (although he doesn't like when you laugh at him for it), and Frank relates to Alan Thicke (who wrote the theme song, whether this makes him a character I don't know...but we weren't about to argue...). Another exciting thing that happened that night, was that I got to meet Dan Panic for the first time!
Sadly, MTX had to leave, so Karl and I walked to call my mom at the hotel, and had a totally scary experience in the process. We called the hotel, and the guy at the counter told me that she had checked out...checked out?!?...yes, he was sure, she was gone. Karl and I were really freaked out, so we left and went back to the club. Luckily, when we got back to the club, my mom was there waiting for us. All in all it was a fabulous night.
