This was night two of the Lookout Records 10th anniversary extravaganza. In addition to MTX, the Criminals, the Smugglers, the Go Nuts, and the Phantom Surfers played. As you shall see, it turned out to be quite an interesting night.I got to the club way way way early. It was good though, because that meant that I got to see MTX soundcheck. Now a soundcheck might not seem that exciting, but it usually is to me. Sometimes they play "Revenge..." rejects or other stuff that I wouldn't normally get to hear. This time they played a really really great song called "I Can't Get Over You." I loved it, but I guess that's not really a surprise.
After the soundcheck there was a whole lot of standing around doing nothing time, but it was worth it. I met a bunch of people, and helped fold t-shirts and stuff, so it ended up not being too boring. Then after a while the bands started playing. The Criminals played first. They were alright, I'm not too terribly excited about them either way though.
In between the Criminals and the Smugglers, I had a very exciting experience (to me at least). I got to meet Jon Von. He's actually the only non-current MTX member that I've ever met, so it was pretty special. He seemed quite cool, although I didn't talk to him for very long, so I could just be projecting coolness upon him.
The Smugglers were great, as always. It was especially cool, since I hadn't seen them play for about a year and a half. They had an extra special dance contest, and who won? None other then one of the afore mentioned record collector boys (see the January 9th story) and this other kid (who had also had his whole record collection at the Gilman show, go figure).
After the Smugglers, the Go Nuts played. Having heard many warnings as to the messiness of the Go Nuts, I made my way to the back balcony and found shelter by Joel's family. I didn't really like the Go Nuts. Musically, I have no idea... I was too distracted by the food fight they instigated to pay much attention. They through all this snack food into the audience, and it made the biggest mess! Worse than that though, was the powdered sugar. They put powdered sugar into their "Snack Cannon" and it blew all the way to the very back of the room. The whole place was filled with it. I don't know if any of you have ever breathed powdered sugar before... but it is most certainly not a pleasant experience. But oh well, it was certainly interesting if nothing else.
After the Go Nuts came the Phantom Surfers. I like them quite a bit. And actually, theyre one of my dad's favorites. They played a quite cool set, including lots of goofy covers.
Next was the moment I'd been waiting for months to see. MTX!!!!! They were absolutely the best... as can be expected. As always Joel and I had a slight disagreement over the set list, which ended in him playing what he wanted and me pouting about it. It's alright though, because it really doesn't matter which songs they play. They're all so fabulous, and seeing them live at all makes everything else inconsequential. Despite my whining, they did play lots of my favorites, and lots of classics for "the kids."
Apparently, MTX setlists are becoming quite a commodity. After their set, Frank went to give his setlist to a girl who had requested he save it for her before the show. When he went to give it to her, a near brawl ensued! This other girl tried to grab it from her, and ended up ripping it in half! I mean, geez!!! That's craziness. The same thing almost happened to me. Jym saved me his setlist, and when he tried to give it to me, all these people tried to snatch it. Luckily, Jym didn't let go of it until it was safely in my hands. It was definately strange though...
After their set, even more craziness ensued. There was a huge argument regarding the huge mess that the Go Nuts made. I didn't realize quite how bad it was when the room was filled with people, but once the place cleared out, whoo boy! My feet stuck to the floor whenever I walked anywhere. Maybe I'm just finicky, but it was quite gross. I don't want to name names, but apparently the sound guy at Slim's broke some of the Go Nuts' snack equipment, and the staff and the Go Nuts had a huge fight.
I stayed around for a little while after the show, mostly just waiting for my ride. I got to see Robert, MTX's roadie on the last tour, and stuff though, so it was pretty cool. The end. (I've pretty much run out of ways to end these things in case you hadn't noticed).
