Bakersfield, CA

I was SOOOOOO excited for this show. Not only was it MTX, but the fabulous Hi-Fives were playing too! Unfortunately, as with anything I'm really excited about, something had to go wrong. The Lookout website said that the show was in Santa Barbara, which is about 150 miles from Bakersfield. So where were Kelley and I at 7 o'clock? Santa Barbara. It was at that point that we discovered that the MTX show in Santa Barbara was the next day. AHH! I called up the club in Bakersfield, and yes, MTX were playing there, and the show was scheduled to start in 45 minutes. Kelley and I ran to the car and raced all the way to Bakersfield. We finally made it to the club a couple hours later, and oh what a long two hours it was.

We ran into the club, because we were worried that we had missed the Hi-Fives. As it turned out, there were two opening bands, the first of which played for an hour or so (I hate when the opening band does that!) so we had plenty of time. The place they played was a pizza parlor, with a long thin cement room in the basement where the bands played. There was also another cement room where the merch table and all that stuff was. Kel and I found everyone and said hi, then went upstairs to avoid the noise and crowd downstairs.

The opening bands played FOREVER it seemed like, and neither was very good. While we were waiting for the Hi-Fives to set up, I struck up a conversation with this girl Megan who asked me if I'm the one with the web page. I talked to her and her brother for quite a bit after that, and they were really nice.

Fairly soon, the amazing Hi-Fives played. It was so good. They played lots of great new songs (Buy the album when it comes out! It rocks!), and lots of old favorites too. The stage was really small, and I was right up in front. The only annoying people were the two kids standing next to me who were elbowing me and stuff for no reason. Hmph.

After they played, MTX hit the stage. It wasn't the best MTX show ever, but not due to any fault of MTX. The sound was just really messed up, and Joel's mic was significantly louder than Frank's and stuff. That being said, it was still a great show. They played Lawnmower of Love, which is a favorite of mine (that they often don't like to play). They opened with The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful too which is always cool.

It was really strange. The whole set, I thought that the place was jam packed, because people kept pushing me. After a while, I looked behind me, and there were only three rows of people (including mine)! Why people feel the need to push in those situations is beyond me. Fortunately for Frank, there was a really big guy in front of him, who (unintentionally) blocked people from going flying into Frank. Yay for the big guy! (Although he did step on me a few times).

MTX finished, and did BBC for their encore. Kel and I stayed around for a while, talking to people and such. I had quite a good time, as always. After we left, Kelley and I went to eat dinner (we sorta missed over that meal as we were rocketing towards Bakersfield at 100 miles an hour). Then we got on the freeway and started looking for a hotel, which turned out to be quite a project. Apparently there are no hotels on the little strip of freeway around Bakersfield, and the ones there are were very expensive. Finally we found one though, and got some much needed rest.
